.March 27, 2024 Workforce Development, per the milestones of the Department of Energy (DOE) grant has started here in Seward. A residential CO2 Heat Pump, SEE MORE HERE has been delivered to the Alaska Vocational Technical Center (AVTEC) to be used as 'hands on training' in their education programs. Here are some photos from the arrival and two days of training that happened with the AVTEC instructors, our Ad Hoc Committee, Seward businesses that work with heat pumps currently and some people from near by towns like Homer, Soldotna and Kenai. SANCO2 founder and CEO, John Miles, was flown to Anchorage and driven to Seward to be the instructor to the AVTEC instructors and the attendees. City of Seward assistant City Manager Jason Bickling and several of the Ad Hoc Community attended zoom invitations for Kickoff Recognition meetings on Oct 12, 2023. All 11 projects that came through the Phase 1 process for grant funds were represented and gave information regarding their community engagement and workforce development overview. Second meeting of the morning was with the Seward Heat Loop project partners, National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) and the same persons with the City and committee. Information was exchanged for the need to arrange a sight visit as soon as possible. See the PDF here for more information:
With a presentation and update given some time ago, the Seward Rotary submitted a letter of support this week to the project. Thank you Rotary!
On June 22nd, 2023, Bruce Jaffa and Mary Tougas gave a presentation to the Seward Community Foundation (SCF) at the Breeze Inn conference room.
Bruce talked about heat pumps in general, how they work, the fact that refrigerators are an example of heat/cooling exchange and that the Seward Heat Loop Project is very similar. Bruce talked about the location of the vertical wells for the continuous loop system that goes first to the Library Museum building where the commercial heat pump systems will extract the heat gathered from Resurrection Bay. A video made by Joevanhta Weddington, a member of the Ad Hoc Committee, a Seward graduate and UAF engineering student, was presented. The video describes the system and shows a drawing of the loop. A support letter was requested and has been received. Thank you SCF for your support! |
